Washing cloth diapers isn't a difficult process. It's as simple as prewash in cold water, wash in hot or warm water, then rinse twice in cold water. Below are suggested washing methods for the diapers offered at belly farm.

Fuzzi Bunz - Wash your Fuzzi Bunz before using and after trying them on your baby for fit. Fuzzi Bunz must be washed after each use. Use a laundry basket or diaper pail to store dirty diapers until wash day. Some prefer to soak dirty diapers in a wet pail. If you decide to do this, the water should be changed daily.

When removing a dirty FB from baby, shake or knock any solid bowel movement into the toilet. You can rinse poop off the cover, but this is not necessary. Pull the insert from the FB before storing. They can all be washed together. It is not recommended that you let dirty FB and inserts sit too long before washing as odors may set in.

On wash day, run the dirty FB and diapers in a cold soak or prewash. If you do not have a soak cycle, run them through a rinse cycle. If you have already soaked your diapers in a pail, spin out any remaining dirty water.

Wash your diapers in HOT water with a moderate amount of detergent* (1/4 - 1/2 of the recommended dose). Overdosing on detergent produces build-up and is the single most common cause of leaking problems.

An additional rinse can be used for particularly soiled loads. Make sure that your diapers are rinsed clean. Any residue from poop, urine, detergent or vinegar can make diapers stink!

FB should not stain. However, some diaper rash ointments will stain and care should be taken when using such products to keep FB nice and stain-free.

  • Do wash your Fuzzi Bunz after each use.
  • Do make sure that there is a snug fit
  • Do make sure that you have the correct size for your baby.
  • Do contact the manufacturer if you have any problems
  • Do not use fabric softener or use pure soap products on Fuzzi Bunz.
  • No bleach or exposure to high heat for prolonged periods of time.
  • Do not overuse detergent - only a little is needed to get the job done.

*We highly recommend using Allens Naturally detergent in either powder or liquid form to wash your diapers. Allens Naturally will leave diapers clean and stink-free, with no build-up. It's healthier for baby and reduces the possibility of leaks.

BabyKicks Hemparoo® Prefolds and Joey-Bunz - Please wash your diapers three times in hot water with detergent, drying them each time before you first use them. They'll continue to increase in absorbency with use, but that should be enough to get most of the natural oils washed out.

You may use any detergent that does not contain enzymes (as enzymes can eat away at your baby's skin once he or she wets, causing a painful rash). If you use a soap product, be sure to do a second cycle with 1/3 cup baking soda to avoid build-up. You may also want to try using 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse. Tumble dry on medium heat to reduce wear on the fibers.

Cotton Prefolds - Prefolds need to be washed in hot water with a little bit of detergent and dried in a hot dryer several times before being used on baby. They have a light wax coating on the threads that needs to be removed for them to quilt up and work properly. Detergent removes this wax along with any residue and natural oil while the dryer fluffs the cotton making diapers absorbant and soft. Bleached prefolds should be washed 2-3 times, but unbleached prefolds should be washed 4-5 times, as the bleaching process strips out some of the wax.

Prefolds will continue to be softer and more absorbent the more they are washed and dried.
